Safe Haven Ballet
Code of Conduct

Updated on 2/14/2024

Our Purpose:

Safe Haven Ballet is the very first Trauma Informed touring professional ballet company and pre-professional training school. We exist to create uplifting ballet based performances and provide free trauma sensitive classes to survivors of sexual/domestic violence and trauma.

About Safe Haven Ballet

Safe Haven Ballet is a unique and uplifting ballet company and school. We are different! We are committed to providing a safe and positive environment for all dancers, students, volunteers, and teachers. SHB will strive to ensure that all students, trainees, and company members can develop to their fullest potential in an inspiring atmosphere.

We welcome all dancers that adhere to the Code of Conduct and desire to be an encouraging part of this exciting community. This code of conduct is to be upheld in the classrooms, at events & performances, on Slack, email exchanges, YouTube, social media, and any other location that represents Safe Haven Ballet.

Any student, company member, parent, or volunteer unable or unwilling to uphold Safe Haven Ballet’s Code of Conduct may be asked to leave all Safe Haven Ballet activities.

Respectful Conduct Guidelines:

Punctuality and Attendance

It is vital that dancers arrive prior to the start time and are ready when class/rehearsal begins. Those arriving late for class/rehearsal may miss important information and impede the learning of others.

Regular attendance is extremely important. If students do not attend on a regular basis, then the development of the class and the individual student will be affected.

Missed classes may be made up by attending a different class at the appropriate level prior to the end of the semester.

Any missed Performance Rehearsals will need to be made up by scheduling a 30-minute private lesson, at the cost of the participant, prior to the next rehearsal.

Personal Appearance and Dress Code

Dancers should arrive dressed and ready for class/rehearsal.

Ballet attire should be tasteful and non-distracting.

Any dancer aged 6-17 must wear pink tights and leotards to class/rehearsals (ages 3-5 are recommended, no required).

Skirts are optional.

All dancers (if hair length permits) should have their hair in a neatly tied bun for class and rehearsals. We ask that all students make a concerted effort to come to class wearing a bun or headband for shorter hair.

Male dancers aged 6-17 will wear fitted solid colored t-shirts, black or gray tights or athletic shorts, high white socks and ballet shoes.

Etiquette

Dancers should refrain from talking during class.

All SHB participants will foster a welcoming atmosphere for all dancers, promoting a sense of community and inclusivity.

All SHB participants will treat instructors, SHB staff, fellow dancers, SHB volunteers, and SHB board members with respect.

All SHB participants will maintain honesty, integrity, and reliability in all interactions and activities.

Offensive language, gestures, and clothing will not be tolerated.

SHB Company Members and Adult Dancers are expected to be positive role models to younger dancers through speech and behavior.

All rubbish should be disposed of properly at the end of class/rehearsal.

Cell Phones should remain on silent and may only be used during breaks, in between classes, and in emergencies.

Bullying and Harassment

Safe Haven Ballet has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of bullying or harassment.

Any SHB dancer who feels they have been bullied or harassed should contact Joy Zulme via email at joy@safehavenballet.org.

Any violation of Safe Haven Ballet’s Code of Conduct may result in a verbal warning from Executive Director, Lissa Curtis, or Operations Director, Joy Zulme, or if serious enough, possible removal from Safe Haven Ballet with no refund of any payments made to Safe Haven Ballet.

By signing below, the Dancer (and Parent if under 18), attest that they have read, understand, and agree to abide by the Code of Conduct at Safe Haven Ballet.
